Layton Scarbrough

Layton Scarbrough is a Virginia-based muralist and children’s book author-illustrator whose work transforms blank walls into visual stories that connect people and place. Recognized for his approachable style and vibrant storytelling, Layton brings communities to life through color, composition, and character.

A graduate of Utah Valley University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration, Layton blends the narrative sensitivity of an illustrator with the scale and presence of a public artist. His murals are known for capturing the soul of small towns, local landmarks, and shared history. He has worked on advertising campaigns and created promotional imagery for companies such as Aviation American Gin, Universal Pictures, iHeart Radio, and several others.

Layton loves to collaborate with towns, nonprofits, and private organizations across the country. In 2025, he partnered with NOWArt and Walmart and has been creating murals for the Community Mural Program. You can find his murals at Walmart stores in Thomasville, AL / Norfolk, VA / Blackstone, VA / Ashland, VA / Cullman, AL.

In 2023, he was awarded 2nd Place for his illustration portfolio at the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Conference in Florida.

When he isn’t painting, Layton can often be found sketching in a local café, hiking with his wife, or planning his next mural adventure.
